Although not as classic as much stronger 'Canes, Isabel has a somewhat double structured eyewall. Leading edge of 1st one is currently about 24 miles east of Cape Lookout...and the 2nd bigger eyewall leading edge around 52 miles miles from Ellis Island.

N end of Okie-Land just reported sustained winds of 80 mph w/ gusts to 98. Isabel eye's just 30 some odd-pony farm miles away. BLUE LAND pressure down to 978 mbs.

Getting ready to launch weather balloon for Isabel and Chicky. Hopefully will get a glimpse of her eye upon 1pm release. She may miss me just to the NE. Been waiting 27 years to launch one right in the eye. She's be the closest to date.

Balloon launch went well. Eye missed BLUE LAND by a few miles. Oh well...5 more years of trying to catch the calm before exiting stage right (or left).

Hope where-ever you were today that you (and "yours" if you have a yours) faired thee well. Some "pre-limb" hot off da press stats before I head back to the farm to sea how my "yours" and barn faired.

.ISA. The "PEAKS" as follows:

- Although many points of enduro-touro-interest may want to lay claim...Isabel brought her eye in-between and over an Ocracoke/Cedar Island entry point late this morning. Okie-Land had some 100 mph gusts at 1045 am just prior to the calm.

- BIG BLUE LAND landed some meezly gusts to 53 mph. May have been a bit higher though. Even though anemometers are in an area that is somewhat relatively "open"...they're still surrounded by the really big-and-bad pine trees.

- Buoy 41001 never lived up to it's, "Dude, I'm eventually gonna get to 45 or so feet before all is said and done" height/image. He left that to 41025. More on that later. For now...41001 got to a peak of 34 feet every 14 seconds at 7am.

- Da Pan got to it's NWW3 forecasted 20 feet every 14 seconds a little earlier than expected. Topped off the tank at 7pm last night.

- Buoy 41025 (whether anyone want's to believe it or not...because there are skeptics out there in this day and ageless age in an event such as the is) got to 45 feet every 17 seconds shortly after midnight tonight...then was rapidly put out of commission with the rougish-ness of it all. What led to this height and rapid onslaught intensification during the wee hours of the morning just a short hop-skip-and-jump so to speak from the bonny shores Hatteras? Wall of strong and leading edge of Isabel's convection was on east side of 41025 heading up. When Isabel was some 100 miles to the east if 41025 around 9pm last night...downstream buoy 41002 was pinging at 32 feet. The aformentioned size and distance from 41025 is by no means out of the question for the wave energy to RISE TO THE OCCASION as it neared the shallower shoals just off the coast of Diamond-D-Land. Like "pre-frontal" weather/tstm activity ahead of a strong moving cold front...no doubt these 45 footers were the "pre-frontal-rouge-runners" from Ms. Isabel. The "ZERO" knot winds at the time of the 45 foot event was not the eyewall going over (Isabel's eye was still SE from the 41002 buoy at this time)...but either the wave (or 45 ft wave'zzz) completely engulfed the new and improved 41025 itself, or...it was ripped completely from it's mooring and is floating (or sinking) away somewhere by now. The coming daze will tell more as to the what/why/how it all happend. Buoy 41025-Area54 isn't known as "THE GRAVEYARD OF THE ATLANTIC for nothing. Isabel was a CAT5 for quite some time. she generated a LOT OF ONCOMING WAVE ENERGY! The LEGENDARY "LUIS" even recorded some 57 footers (not at DSLN7 per se) on his way around and up the block back in '95. Not out of the question for the young lady to do nearly the same with all the power and energy not to mention the 50 nautical mile wide eye and 160-190mph winds she had not too terribly long ago.

- Forget the "waves at the end of the pier" reading at Duck at the height of the fury up there. 12.3 ft? Gimmie a break. What I do believe however were the "waves 2 miles out" reading at noon today (which was peak) of 33 ft being carried up and into (the 12 noon picture looks like "OVER" dude) the front and forward ends of the pier. The SE CAM showed major overwash and breaching of the dunes too. Lord only knows what the rest of the "high-profile" OVERWASH area's around the banks look like.

- Avalon Pier's LAST CAM pic was at 1246 pm. The shot before showed a HUGE-HUGE-HUGE (enough huge's?) WAVE breaking over the BOW of the wood. To me?...look's like the end was chomped off. No more pics after that pic. What happened? 'Cause my (and Paige's) imagination is running wild (with what happened to the pier that is). A note here: DUCK PIER just up the quashed sand dune road was reading 25 feet "2 miles out" (uh-huh...how 'bout right at the end of the jump off point) during this, "WOW, DID YOU SEE THAT ICE? THE CAM SHOWED A HUGE WAVE COMING OVER THE END OF PIER!" epi-sod-sick event.

- BLUE LAND station pressure dropped to 969 mbs at 130pm as Isabel say adios. No doubt carrying the weather balloon I just sent up along with her as a sue-ven-neer.

Gotta cruise and sea what's going on at home and to have some birthday cake with Mrs Ice and Chicky. Nice talking with you over the cell today K-Man. Glad you know which way north is now.
